WHY RECYCLE
Over 20 million personal computers became obsolete in 1998. Only 13% were re-used or recycled.
Over 2 million tons of consumer electronics were thrown out in 2000. Only 9% were recycled.
Circuit boards, batteries, and color cathode ray tubes (CRTs) contain hazardous materials, such as lead,
mercury and hexavalent chromium.
Televisions and CRT monitors contain four pounds of lead on average, but can contain over eleven pounds.
The leading source of mercury in municiple waste comes from electronics.
Many plastics used in electronics contain brominated flame retardants. If not handled correctly, these
toxics can be released into the environment through incinerator ash or landfill leachate.
Hard drives contain your personal information on them, simply deleting your files or using windows
formatting programs will not permanently delete your sensitive information.
Electonics contain valuable materials that can be put back into the recycling stream and made into
new products.
Electronics are the fastest growing stream of municiple waste.
If it has a cord or circuit board... We'll recycle it!
